When did people first start using water ionizers?

A brief history of water ionizers is kind of fascinating! Water ionizers have been around since the 1950s, when the first commercial water ionizer was manufactured in Japan. The technology and the public’s interest in owning it gathered pace almost instantly, with domestic machines on sale by 1958. Interestingly, these home-use machines were certified for use as medical devices that could be used to improve health, rather than just a water machine for hydration.

Korea picked up on the desire for water ionizer technology shortly afterward, building a mass-produced water ionizer industry by the 1970s.

Despite decades of success in Asia, water ionizers didn’t really reach the United States and Europe until much later. Now, an internet search will bring up lots of US companies selling water ionizer machines, and the buzz about the health benefits has never been louder!

What is a water ionizer and what does it actually do?

So, what do water ionizers actually do?

Water ionizers are plumbed into your existing water supply. They’re usually pretty easy to install and can be fitted in under an hour.

Once your water ionizer is connected to your water supply, you’re ready to go! Now, some water ionizers have pretty basic controls, while the high-end ones feature smartphone-style, super-sophisticated technology. Either way, you’ll press a button, or turn a jog dial to start the water flow.

Your tap water enters the water ionizer and here’s where the magic happens! The water ionizer literally transforms your tap water in several stages. First, the water is filtered – more on this later – before it flows over and around electrolysis plates inside the water ionizer machine. The electrical charge from the plates does a remarkable thing - it splits the water into two streams: alkaline and acidic.

Why is water from a water ionizer different from regular tap water?

Okay, so we know how ionized water is created, but what’s the big deal about it? Why is it different from tap water?

A huge part of the appeal is how clean the water is, once it's been ionized. It’s no secret that the nation’s tap water is problematic. Stories of health-threatening and deadly contaminants turning up in the public water supply hit the press with gloomy frequency. From lead, to radium, ‘Forever Chemicals,' nitrates and Chromium-6 (the ‘Erin Brockovich’ chemical) - there are a lot of toxic things in the water, and they’re bad news for your health.

A water ionizer cleans up your tap water beautifully, so that harmful and unpleasant toxins and particles are removed. Bear in mind that there is a scale of how effective filtration is, with standards varying between water ionizer models.

There’s a shortcut to finding a water ionizer with awesome filters!  A great way to do your research is to look for a water ionizer company that publishes its third party, independent laboratory filtration data on its selling website. If a company doesn’t publish this information, you have to ask yourself why that might be.

Similarly, some water ionizers have few customizable features, while others can be tailored to your precise preferences, with a range of presets and user-friendly technology.

The price of the water ionizer doesn’t always reflect this – some lower-spec, less advanced models swing the same price tag as a top-of-the-range machine.
