What are Allergies?
Allergies are hypersensitive responses from your immune system to certain substances that your body deems as harmful, such as:
- Pollen
- Bee venom
- Pet dander
These substances that cause allergic reactions are known as allergens.
What Are Some Symptoms of Allergies?
Allergies exist in many forms – and you may even be shocked to learn of how many different types there are. Some allergies are year-round, and others are seasonal. Some allergies may even last a lifetime.
The most common symptoms of allergies include:
- Sneezing

- Stuffy or runny nose

What Causes Allergies?
There are several suggested reasons behind this: our world is too “clean”, and kids aren’t being exposed to the wide range of germs that will train their immune systems to recognize the harmful ones.
Climate change is another major factor. Allergy seasons in the US have increased by 11-27 days between 1995 and 2011, causing more allergic reactions and asthma attacks.
You can also get allergies from taking medication or being exposed to mold, pollen, insects, pets, latex, and certain types of food.
There are also lifestyle factors that play a role, such as obesity, a lack of vitamin D (which is essential for immune system development) and low or non-existent amounts of exercise.

What Role Does Histamine Play in Allergies?
Our bodies produce histamine, a neurotransmitter found in some of our cells.
The immune system triggers the cells to release histamine into the bloodstream when someone encounters an allergen, where it then produces allergic symptoms.
So, if you’re allergic to something – your immune system treats the harmless substance (dust, food and so on) as an invader, and tries to “purge” it by getting the unwelcome guest out through a runny nose and watery eyes.
However, histamine has another very important job: regulating your hydration levels.
If you get dehydrated, your body releases histamine to make sure that your brain and other vital organs have enough water.
When you’re not adequately hydrated, extra histamine is produced to contract smooth muscle tissue (for example, in the lungs and stomach) to preserve water.
The key takeaway here? The more hydrated you are, the less histamine your body will produce.
