Three New Studies Conclude; Vitamins Don’t Work!

That’s life.  Just as you start settling in and getting comfortable with what you have always believed was good and healthy for you, along comes another scientific study that says it’s time to readjust the paradigm.

Vitamin pile of pills     This time, the target is vitamins.  Growing up, I had always heard; take vitamin C for colds, B12 for energy, A and D for strong bones, etc.  However, several recent studies by various and sundry doctors, conclude that while taking vitamins is big business, it is not necessarily good science.

For this blog, along with other sources, I relied on Brenda Goodman’s article for WebMD in which she lays out the results of three studies

Gluten Free: What is Gluten and Should You Avoid It?

Breads    Gluten-free is a term we hear with more and more frequency these days.  Gluten-free diets are the new health rage, while the banner gluten-free appears on many food product labels on the market today.  But what exactly is gluten?  I wanted to know and here is what I learned.

Gluten:   /’Glootn/ nounA substance present in cereal grains, especially wheat, that is responsible for the elastic texture of dough.  A mixture of two proteins, it causes illness in people with Celiac Disease.

Gluten is a binding protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. It is what makes pizza dough stretchy, gives bread its softness, and helps it

Tyent Ionized Alkaline Water versus Poison Water

One drink you really should avoid Diet-soda     We eat and drink many things that are bad for us health wise.  In some ways, it is understandable.  I would think that most people, if given the option, would probably choose a snack cake over a bowl of kale.  Yet the snack cake is loaded with sugar, artificial flavors, and preservatives while in a Human Nutrition Research Center study, kale ranked highest in antioxidants of any food.

So while we won’t stop consuming all the things that are bad for us or begin consuming all the things that are good for us, with a little common sense and will power, we can strike a balance.

I wanted to write about foods and drinks

Tyent USA, Water and Our World

                                          Water, Facts & Figures

water streaming    The more I read about water, the more fascinated I become.  Water not only covers two thirds of our planet, but also makes up a large percentage of plant and animal life, including us humans.

Plants are composed of 90 to 95% water.  Humans average about 55 to 60% water.  Plants take in water through their roots and leaves, while humans and most other animals must drink it.  Plants do not have circulatory systems as animals do.  Our circulatory system carries the water we ingest to the small intestine whereby it enters the bloodstream (through osmosis) which circulates it throughout the body and into the cell walls.

In order for plants to release water,

Water at Work in Our Bodies

Water cogs  Undeniably, we cannot live without two nutrients. Food and water. Three, if you count chocolate.

Food, you can last nearly a month without eating. Water, only about a week if you are lucky. But why is water so important to us? What does water do to and for our bodies to keep us alive?  I want to try to answer those questions in non-technical language.

How important is water to our system?  According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a mere two percent decrease of water in our bodies can cause fatigue and a reduction in brain function.  This makes me think I’m low on water most days.  Our connection to water and

The Dangers of What We Drink

Crazy-woman-with-crossed-eyes-drinking-wine-through-a-straw  It is crazy the amount of soft drinks and sodas consumed in this country each year.  The negative effects on the health of the nation are becoming more apparent which each new study, especially when it comes to our children.  Check out some of these numbers.

*Colas/sodas: Every year, the average American consumes around 45 gallons of unhealthy, sugary soda.  That’s the equivalent of about one and a half bathtubs of cola.  Most worrisome is the amount of sugar contained in these drinks.

There are an incredible sixteen teaspoons of sugar in an average twenty-ounce cola. Sixteen teaspoons in one soda.

Tyent Ionized Alkaline Water in a Chemical World

                                             What’s in Your Water?

Viking    Most of us have seen those popular television commercials starring those Viking looking barbarians asking, “What’s in your wallet?

Well, a better question may be, “what’s in your water? From what I discerned from a recent article I read about the safety of drinking water in the United States, the picture looks pretty bleak.  Here are a few stats to mull over about the purity of the water we drink.  Overall, we use some 60,000 chemicals in America.  Frightening enough, but even scarier is the fact that of those 60,000, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) regulates only about 90 of those contaminants.  Even at that, they don’t eliminate them;
