1. Buy pumpkins close to home, that have been grown locally. Farmers markets and community growers should be your first port of call. And once you’ve carved them, try to use as much of the pumpkin flesh as possible in soups, pies and even smoothies!
2. Don’t buy a costume for you or the kids. The fabric is usually a non-sustainable type and gets stuffed at the back of a closet and then thrown away. Look around at what you have and cut, sew, customize and create something original and fabulous!
3. Don’t buy plastic decorations – there are hundreds of ideas floating around the internet on making eco-versions of the old favorites. If you paint your creations, opt for non-toxic paints and give any non-biodegradable or single-use craft elements a swerve.
4. Shop mindfully for any Halloween party food and make your own spooky snacks instead of relying on supermarket fare in layers of packaging. I mean, how much fun could you have making undead gingerbread people?
5. Make a conscious decision to use decorated paper sacks instead of plastic buckets and to serve drinks in jugs and flasks instead of handing out bottled water.
