What is the Atkins Diet?

Devised by a doctor, Robert Atkins, the original Atkins Diet was about eating all the fat and protein you like, while avoiding carbohydrates, in order to induce ketosis, a state during which fat is burned to produce energy.

There are four phases to the Atkins Diet. In the first phase, you should consume no more than 20 g of carbs per day. As you move through the different phases, you increase the amount of carbs you eat in incremental amounts, while maintaining a steady weight loss.

What do doctors and experts say about the Atkins Diet?

Generally, doctors are fans of people reaching and maintaining a healthy weight. They’re traditionally less enthusiastic about cutting out food groups. The Atkins Diet has also attracted plenty of criticism for its high fat content.

In 2018, the Atkins Diet was dealt a blow when a major new study linked the regimen to a variety of health issues, including an increased risk of heart failure in men.
