In these days of and the HCG Diet and Low-Carb everything, it’s kind of refreshing to see the words ‘low-fat diet.’ It sounds old-school, something our moms probably tried at some point.

What is a low-fat diet?
Like most diets these days, there’s an extreme version, which involves eating virtually no fat at all. In the short term, you’ll lose weight for sure, but we need some fats in our diet. Completely excluding a food group for weight loss reasons (as opposed to medical, ethical or religious ones) is usually hard to sustain in the long term.
The regular low-fat diet means just that – cutting back on fat content, but not cutting it out.
What can I eat on a low-fat diet?
Going plant-based and lean will help. Lean chicken and lean beef are good choices, as are fish and seafood. Eat whole grains, legumes and pulses and if you enjoy dairy, then try to source the low-fat version of your favorite things.
How many calories can I have per day on a low-fat diet?
On a standard low-fat eating plan, aim to stick with around 1,200 calories per day, with 20 percent of those calories coming from fat. That’s the same as around 26 grams of fat per day – but try to make those fats healthy ones (oils and nuts etc), rather than saturated fat.
What do doctors and experts say about a low-fat diet?
Low-fat sounds uncontroversial, but there are red-flags to watch out for, that means the low-fat diet doesn’t get a completely clean bill of health. Quitting saturated fats is a good thing all round – they’re bad news. But replacing regular fat with sugar, fructose and – even worse – trans fats, isn’t exactly a healthy choice.
Read labels carefully if you want to choose a low-fat processed product – they’re notorious for ‘hiding’ unhealthy ingredients in there somewhere, while kidding you that you’re making a healthy choice.
What type of water or beverages are best to drink on a low-fat diet?
You can enjoy the following drinks pretty freely on a low-fat diet:
- Green tea, including unsweetened, flavored versions
- Lots of water!
- Coffee
- Regular black tea
- Herbal tea
- Vegetable juice
Try to steer clear of all types of soda – that stuff is all kinds of bad news.
