San Francisco Bans Bottled Water Sales!

In a noble, if somewhat puzzling effort, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors has voted unanimously to ban the sale of single-use bottled water smaller than 21 ounces from city property and events. This ban also prohibits the sale of same by food trucks regulated by the city. The city already has banned the use of plastic bags for sacking customer purchases.
It is the hope of city officials that the banning of these plastic water bottles will induce a new mindset toward pollution reduction while helping to achieve the city’s goal to cut landfill waste down to zero by 2020.
Each year, the United States sends roughly 33.6 million tons of plastic of all types to the landfill and not just water bottles as the San Francisco legislators implied.
This ban, one of the strictest in the country, was heralded by environmentalists as an important step in ridding landfills of the seemingly ubiquitous plastic bottle.
Environmentally conscience David Chiu, the city supervisor who authored the initial legislation, stated, “I want to remind people that not long ago our world was not addicted to plastic water bottles”. “For centuries, everybody managed to stay hydrated”.
That is true. However, for centuries you could also bend down and drink from a clean stream or at least, fill a canteen. It is interesting in that law seems to target only one area of one industry, and that the ban pertains only to bottled water and not all plastic bottles. You can buy and drink as many plastic bottles of any size sugary soda your wallet and body can withstand and as many of those difficult to recycle coffee cups from Star Bucks, but you’d better not buy a small bottle of water. From that perspective, it isn’t so much a health-related ban. It is more a focused ban on PET bottles.
PET bottles are the plastic bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate; the same ones stuffing our landfills and choking our waterways.
Interestingly enough, much of this pollution would be reduced immediately if people would merely recycle their plastic bottles. According to EPA figures of 2012, Americans recycled 30.6% of their plastic bottles. Impressive stats until you realize China recycled 90%.
Proponents of the San Francisco legislation say, while it is a great first step, even stronger measures need to be taken to eliminate plastic bottles, while critics cry that by reducing the choices we have, people may turn to sugar-laden sodas and other unhealthy drinks to hydrate themselves.
Additionally, in an article by Adam Minter, he suggests that city officials look for a better way to reduce our plastic footprint since the recycling of PET bottles are easier and more profitable to recycle than say, milk cartons, juice boxes or paper cups. In fact, according to the EPA, plastic bottles were the most recycled products in 2012. Either way, it’s a new day in the Bay.
Seattle, Washington, and other major cities have already passed laws regarding plastic water bottle usage.
Not surprisingly, the American Beverage Association wasn’t too happy with the new law as expressed in their official statement. “Water is good for you, and people should be able to choose how they drink it—whether from a tap, a fountain, or recyclable container”.
It’s a world gone mad.
